The most popular are the jungly Costa Ballena on the Central Pacific (an open-plan beachfront space with bunks and hammocks, wooden floors, ocean view) and the more laid-back eight-mile stretch of Caribbean coast between lively Puerto Viejo and sleepy Manzanillo (turquoise sea, parrots, jungle cabins, nightlife, surf camps, gingerbread beach cottages).
