The headline of the article I have read is « Thousands of cancer patients 'too poor to celebrate Christmas'».
It was published in Press Association on the 30th of November.
The purpose of the article is to give the reader some information about a heavy financial position of people with cancer.
At the beginning of the story the author touches a subject of a bad financial and social status of people of cancer patients. He says that people with cancer will feel “cold and lonely” this Christmas .
Then the author gives some statistics:
Almost 170,000 people in the UK with cancer are unable to join in special family events such as Christmas due to a lack of cash, according to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Its survey of almost 1,000 people living with cancer found 9% had to miss out on visiting family and friends because they could not afford it.
Other research of more than 1,600 people who have been in touch with Macmillan found 28% were unable to adequately heat their home in winter due to money worries.
The charity has previously found 83% people with cancer are on average £570 a month worse off as a result of their diagnosis.
The article goes on to say that Macmillan said the government must rethink its plan on welfare, which it said would take £30 a week away from people with cancer who are too ill to work. People with cancer can lose hundreds of pounds each month because of their diagnosis.
In conclusion the author writes about Department for Work and Pensions’ solution that the vast majority of those with cancer will not be affected by the changes and won’t be expected to look for work, and no one already claiming employment and support allowance will be worse off under these reforms.
I found the article useful because this topic is very relevant. Currently there are a lot of people with cancer who do not receive support neither from the state nor from their relatives. I feel sorry for them because they feel lonely and really need better conditions. The government should take all measures in other to improve their position. If the government ignores it, there should be some charity organizations which will gather some donations. This idea is put into practice in many cities, and our town is not an exception. Every New Year holidays people collect some presents for those who can't afford them and send it to the hospitals and other insitutions for people in need. It is a very good tradition. I hope that people with cancer will also be able to find support.
Please, answer the question : why do you think the government does't want to provide support for people with cancer?

  1. Nadya, thank you for examining such an urgent issue. It may sound provocatively and roughly but the sad truth is that cancer patients bring no use to the government. Those who are seriously ill are not able to work and consequently to pay taxes which are the main income for the state. Unfortunately, those who are in power often put themselves above others and treat people as things, not appreciating their lives. It's very hard to realize but that's the truth. Most public hospitals almost immediately send cancer patients to hospice. Is it worth to say something else?

  2. Thank you Nadya for the informative article. Unfortunately, it's an awful reality. There are a lot of people who have some desease. I think government try to do something to improving their life. Bit it's not enough. The cancer patients have some benefits, if it even so little..

  3. Nadya, thank you for the article and for your attention to such a topic. There are plenty of people around us having different kinds of diseases and moreover being really limited in support and finansial. You're asking about the government leaving such people without any help. Actually there could be many points. If to speak about our country - I guess our president is really trying to do his best. At the latest 90's and at the beginning of 00's our country looked really miserably. Putin has done much. The point is he can't do everything at the same time. Actually there are some projects to suport such people, we should just be patient and trust our leader.

  4. Nadya, thank you for you attention to the article and to this problem. Unfortunately, nowadays the medecine is powerless...and then the government doesn't pay attention to this. The treatment is very expensive and requires a lot of money. The government doesn't finance it and people must pay a lot of money to have a little hope and opportunity for convalescence. It's sad but it's true...But there're charities and welfare organizations which help people with cancer. They pick up money for their treatment or collect some presents and things to cheer them. It's very important to support them so that they know the are not alone.
